Generalised notions that rooms are fundamental problems to be eliminated are faulty, but the exaggeration is often used to promote sales of consulting services and acoustical materials. No doubt that we need some amount of these to achieve the best possible sound, but used selectivel, in moderation, and targeted to specific issues.
For the mass market, it appears that there is a generous happy middle ground, witch is delivered by a lot of normally furnished domestic rooms. The key is to start with good loudspeakers—something not easy to identify in this culture (Section 12.1) (zie mijn signatuur. Spinorama shit.) If that is accomplished, refining the acoustical performance of normal listening spaces or designing a custom one from a clean sheet of paper is not difficult—except for the bass frequencies.
