Denk dat dit een mooie voorbeeld track is van wat ik uiteindelijk wil bereiken met die synth. Zitten meerdere sounds in en de synth moet in staat zijn om alles te produceren.

" THE SYNTH

Aaaaah. The almighty Roland JP-8000. Lesson learned - never, absolutely NEVER listen to other people and never judge synths according to popular opinions. This of course automatically applies to what I'm writing here, and to my opinions. Always play the gear yourself, simply. This was supposed to be one of the coolest, best-sounding synths out there. Is it? Well... not quite.

It's hard for me to bash this synth, because like the Nord Lead, it's a "player's synth". And what I mean by that? I mean that it's very limited, but has an interface that is extremely easy to operate and manages to strike a chord with the listener because it's MUSICAL. For example, Blofeld has shitload of functions and routes to go, but the procedure of reaching your dream sound is that you start under a pile of bricks and you need to dig yourself out. I don't know nor do I care about the philosophy of trance music and supersaw sounds so I'll leave that, but I do see the JP's appeal in the vintage / classically-structured patches area. You get these patches quick, and you get them rich in this old-fashioned flavor and simple grooviness. Moreover, I don't need to go deep and with a couple of knob twists I get cool The Fragile-like [Nine Inch Nails epic sound design album] sounds. Maybe that's why Charlie Clouser, Chris Vrenna, and Clint Mansell like this synth (or LIKED, because the interviews I read were from the '90s). What gets me down me the most is that:

- the coolest wave, which is the feedback wave, puts the synth into MONO and there's no modulation source (apart from ribbon/slider) to modulate the feedback/harmonics... WTF.
- as a sound sculpting tool, the FX unit is of no avail, it's just too quitet and not deep enough to bend the sound anything beyond stereofying the patch a bit
- it has even more limited architecture than the Nord Lead 2. All you get from JP8000 is basically [LFO1]. Because [LFO2] works only as a subsidiary of [Pitch Bender], and the [Mod Envelope] modulates the same destination as [LFO1]. You think you can route [LFO1] to pitch and [Mod Env] to [FM] ? No. They both control just one destination. Kind of super idiot-proof user-friendly option.

Let's divide people into three categories;

1.techno-trance maniacs,
2.classic vintage calm electro geeks, and
3.geeks like me.

Group 1 is thrilled judging from what I hear on the Net, although Virus and Vanguard and whatever sound better to my ears... but who the fuck cares.
Group 2 will be satisfied and will often get goosebumps and cream their pants

And group number 3... If you appreciate the versality and synthiness of synths like Alesis Ion, Waldorfs and stuff, and if you dig complex weird ass shit FX stuff, then don't waste your money on JP8000. It does have its merits like: lush pads and spacious strings, dirty basses and piercing leads, dreamy textures and sprinkling bursts of sound, plus the juicy filter / killer-laser resonance really reminding of the old analog gear. I enjoy all of that, yet the same kind of stuff and the same potential is to be found in other synths, but you just need to dig it out. A much cheaper Yamaha AN1x will do all the JP8000 tricks I believe, the only catch being its mere 8 knobs... Here you pay for the interface [which is great & easy]. I really like the JP bass and strings, despite the sad fact that there's only a couple of them to be made on this machine. I view JP8000 as one of these synths with its "special / cult sound", a sound that brings your memories back. And eventually I might understand the fact that some people call it "the best cheap VA there is," as long as "best VA" means "a synth that can emulate the qualities and nuances of oldskool Rolands". But if the "best VA" phrase was to mean "best modern synth", then ABSOLUTELY not. Again, go back to Ion and Blofeld which offer a thousand more possibilities. Just let us not compare their sound. It's different. And it has always been about the sound, hasn't it...

So, the last word: JP is an overhyped average synth with the most appealing highpass filter and crunchy dirt I've heard on a VA. "

Ehhh, heb je je wel eens verdiept in de JP? Dat ding schreeuwt en scheurt aan alle kanten als een gek.

ontopic: Ik heb allebei de apparaten gehad, de JP heb ik nog. De JP is een betere keuze als je echt heel erg vieze scheurende geluiden wil maken. De Nord Rack 2 is grappig en heeft een goede algemene sound, maar heeft verreweg niet de power van de JP.

De JP ken ik van A tot Z. Onze perceptie van scheuren ligt waarschijnlijk anders

Die WC Olo Garb heeft wel een gezond statement over synths in het algemeen: "It's not what synthesizer can do for man, it's what man can do with synthesizer."

Heb geen ervaring met de JP8000, behalve de software emulatie Superwave Trance Pro VST.

De Nord Rack 2 heb ik zelf en die is zo hands-on als het maar kan zo ongeveer, het enige wat je in een "menu" moet doen (2-3x op een knop drukken, is niet eens echt een menu) is Unison instellen, midi channels, output mode etc.

Als je weet hoe een synth werkt, kan je blind zonder ook maar iets van een nord rack 2 te weten meteen vrijwel alles zonder handleiding, op een paar dingetjes na.

Alle synth-delen en parameters zijn ALLEMAAL hands-on, en hij klinkt heel goed!

Mag ik vragen waarom een JP of NL2? Ik heb ze beide en imo zijn er tegenwoordig veeeeeeeeeeeel betere alternatieve (en goedkoper).
Zowel JP als NL reeks hebben hun gouden tijden gehad hoor. Vooral de JP klinkt niet echt goed t.o.v. een Virus of een Blofeld. Vooral deze laatste is zeker een aanrader (heeft ook een SuperSaw osc die zelfs nog veel beter klinkt dan de originele JP SuperSaw).
Zowel de JP als NL zijn meer 'collector items' geworden .. hebben dingetjes zeg maar. Ze gaan 2de hands veel te duur.

Mijn advies: kan je budget het aan, koop een Virus TI, anders kies voor de Waldorf Blofeld. Die synth heeft mij echt omver geblazen met zijn klank en mogelijkheden. ECHT ! Ik durf er echt mijn Voyager naast zetten, de Blofeld zal niet verbleken!

Daarnaast is de TI zeker niet hands on. Je blijft door diepe menu's heen ploeteren. Ook de blowfeld is gebaseerd op
een diepe menu structuur. Dat heb je nu eenmaal met uitgebreide synths.

Ik vind zelf een combi van verschillende synths erg fijn werken. Juist de verschillende karakters maken, mijns inziens, het klankenpalet erg interessant. Een nummer alleen gemaakt met 1 synth vind ik vaak minder spannend klinken op 1 of andere manier.

Overigens vind ik een TI met de software wel erg fijn werken.

Voor het programmeren van geluiden is de NordLead/Rack simpel recht vooruit.
Voor het spelen op het podium zijn er zeer diepe mogelijkheden. Per slot is het een podium instrument.

Toch even dit:
De Blofeld heeft misschien geen 101 knopjes/sliders maar de heel simpele handson matrix editing is heel intuitief en snel om mee te werken zonder 1 menutje door te worstelen.
Na meer dan 20jaar kan ik echt zeggen dat de Blofeld imo de beste VA synth is ooit gemaakt. Ik stond er eerst zeer sceptisch tegenover maar na enkele uren was ik verkocht.
Voor diepe bass sounds is hij niet te evenaren (dub-step en d'n'b here we come).
Maar ook de pads zijn merkwaardig en soms zeer uniek (door combinatie PPG en VA).

de ts vroeg om een hands-on synth. dat is de blofeld echt niet.
