It's interesting in any way: there are Opera 6 with VCOs being labelled as DCOs... there are some models with truely DCOs inside as well, and there are KIWIs with DCOs and some with VCOs... It sounds like a little joke, but there seems to be no real concept behind whether the italian technicians used VCOs or DCOs... But at the end sonical differences are not that big, so if a nice Opera 6 / KIWI in mint condition is offered - take it, no matter which oscillators it contains.
instant bel tubey weirde sounds
timelaps = possible

The two italian synthesizers Siel Opera-6 and Siel Kiwi are - regarding their strong sonical character - among the most powerful "affordable" polyphonic analog keyboards.
But to be honest: especially the Opera 6 doesn't look very spectacular at all, no way! It rather looks dull, featuring a cheap layout coupled with some brittle knobs and switches... And well, the KIWI is not much better either: who the hell gave it the name "KIWI"? Why isn't the instrument's colour greeeeen? Well, today I think metallic-blue somehow looks cool, I really like it. But still this synthesizer might be a "no name" instrument for many... even in Europe...
One day a friend told me "You have to get an Opera 6"... This was a very good friend, so I thought "OK, let's have a look at Ebay "... Well, there was an Opera 6 immediately on auction. I took it and had a very bad concious. "What do I need another polyphonic analog synth for..? There is my wonderful Roland Juno-60 I will never sell again. It's enough, isn't it???"
In the meantime I changed my opinion completely. Not about the all-time classic Roland, but about the rather-dull-looking italian Siel synthesizers. They still look the same, but now I know their musical power... and that's truely impressive!!!
The Opera 6 simply sounds great! It's not only warm-sounding, aggressive, subtle, what ever you want... it has a strong character in its own. Sure, I must agree - this instrument fits perfect to my way of producing electronic music. But that's the key, correct? If you're able to make brilliant music, it's the right instrument... On the other side there might be some musicians who have no clou what to do with an Opare 6... it's simply a question of personal taste and individual musical expression.
There are some technical features that lead to the outstanding musical character of Opera 6/KIWI
there's an analog filter with SSM-Chips !!! Sounds extremely warm...
you can control envelope intensity via velocity !!! Either by Midi or keyboard. This is the most important and unique feature. To be exact - there are two possibilities: you either modulate the total envelope intensity (going straight to VCF and/or VCA) and/or you modulate attack-time !!! And this feature is quite rare... Some huge modular systems offer it, the Korg PS-series does the same, and Oberheim's all-time classic Xpander even lets you control all parts of the envelope. However, musical results are marvellous. Velocity on the envelope/attack time gives you endless musical expression. Simply play a nice bass line and let some dedicated notes bring in some shuffle... rhythmical expression on sequences are sometimes even more imprtant than the melody itself..!
= fatt xpressie op de attack ,..dus een bassline ...die qa timing door vel. verschuift
groove genoemd door roland !!!!
