Did we get our hands on an unknown predecessor to the Japanese synth legacy? An ancient "Ace Tone SY100" analog synthesizer prototype(?) has come into our possession. The model appears to have no traceable history. We're restoring it and aim to emulate it in a future plugin release. The idea that anyone, in 2021, would come across a truly "undiscovered” vintage synthesizer seems absurd. After all, even the most esoteric prototypes have been discussed on forums, sold on Ebay, documented on YouTube – or gotten their own page on Vintage Synth Explorer. Yet, the SY100 appears to be a mystery. In fact, the only record we can find online is a post on the Vintage Synth Explorer forum written by the same guy who we bought it from. (The SY100 has been mentioned elsewhere after we posted about it – for instance in this article by Synth Anatomy and on Ace Tone's Wikipedia page). We're pretty amazed to have come across a virtually untold chapter of synthesizer history. Ace Tone was the first company founded by Ikutaro Kakehashi, who later founded Roland (i.e. the company responsible for some of the most legendary electronic gear of the 20th century). So in some ways, this prototype (if that's what it is?) can be seen as a predecessor to all that. We're in the process of restoring the SY100 to its original condition, and provided that goes well, we'll do our very best to create a faithful sofware emulation that will give everyone access to its raw and quirky sound. For now, the synth is kept behind locks in a safe storage facility while we figure out the next steps. If you have any information on its history, please let us know by replying to this email. We’d love to learn as much as we possibly can!
