Beste audiofielen,

Dear Audiolovers,
I will do this thread in English, because if you know anyone who would be interested in this call, you can pass it on to them, and language should not be a barrier there.
My name is Daniel Maalman and I am currently graduating on the Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede (AKI), direction Mixed Media/Media Art.
One of my two graduation projects is called the Blackbox. I am working on this project together with my friend Stef van der Poel who is a Social Psychologist and above all musician and audio purist. We have been making music together for quite some years now, and the idea of this art installation comes from our mutual love for music and the workings of sound.

About The Blackbox
The Blackbox is a totally dark, soundproof chamber which is spanning two meters in every direction. A comfortable chair is situated in the middle of the room and a control system allows the listener to browse through the available compositions and choose one.
Once a composition is chosen by pushing a number on the control system that corresponds with a "program" on the menu, the room comes out of the standby-mode, into action. The lights are automatically faded, and the chair slides back motorically into the laying position. Also, a electromagnet in the door becomes active, which makes sure that the door is slightly locked. The listener can push the panic button at all times to abort the experience and leave the room. This is of course only in a case of emergency.
When the box has become active, the audiosequence starts by itself. This is a 5 to 7 minute long composition that plays over 4 active, fullrange monitors that are in a square grid, situated around the head of the listener. Two passive subwoofers hooked up to a separate amplifier take care of the bass (so six speakers in total).
The idea of the Blackbox is to create a situation that is designed for listening, and the complete and utter darkness that surrounds the listener makes sure that the other senses are reduced to a minimum level to prevent distraction.
Earlier compositions were made by us (Daniel&Stef), to try out the possibilities of the room. We made use of the well known ´binaural beats´trick where we tried to influence the mental state of the listener by changing their brainfrequencies. We used natural white noise samples, like wind, trees, the sea, which we recorded in nature with fieldrecorders to contrast the low brainwave oscillators. If you want to include binaural beats into your composition we can fix this at the final stage of production, since it has to be finetuned to the room. (Mind you: this is an option but not compulsory).
Now, what we would like to have, is enthusiastic audioloving producers and musicians, who want to make new compositions for the BlackBox. The installation will be on display on my graduation show in June, first at the Academy, and afterwards in the cultural district of Enschede. Our plan is to extend the project after that and exhibit it in several places, while constantly adding new compositions to the collection.
Technical details
The soundsystem of the BlackBox is a Dual Core PC, running on Ableton Suite 7 (supported by Pd for the communication with the Arduino-chip that runs the ´robotic functions´ inside the box). Connected to the PC is a GigaPort HD Audio Interface that has 8 mono channels, of which 6 are used at this moment. As said, the audiosequences play over 4 active, fullrange monitors that are situated around the head of the listener. Two passive subwoofers hooked up to a separate amplifier take care of the bass.
If you want to participate in this project there are a few steps to take.
1. Send us an e-mail to let us know you want to participate. This doesn´t have to be long, just your name, maybe a link to some of your music if you have this, and an idea you might have about the sequence you want to make for the BlackBox.
2. Start making it at home, keeping in mind that you can use four speakers for the mid-high range (mono signal of course), and two for the bass range.
This means, that if you have two stereo monitors in your studio, like most people, you make a global sequence plan at home. When you have a basic setup, buildup, samples, sequence and so on, you can send us a link to where you have uploaded the 6 renderfiles through e-mail. We will download them and test them in the BlackBox, one participant at a time. From the compositions that get sent to us by all participants, we will select five of them for the upcoming exhibition in June.
3. If you are selected, we will invite you to come and finish the composition inside the BlackBox. You can sit in the chair where the listener is going to be experiencing the composition and finetune the sequence to the room. In this way you don´t need 6 speakers at home to be able to participate, and above all the composition will be completely made for the room and the experience.
The reason why we only select five people for the first round, is because we want a diverse menu of compositions to illustrate the possibilities that can demonstrate what sound can do in a setting where one´s own imagination has to fill in the rest of the experience.
After this first round we will do the same again, and invite new people to compile a complete new program. This means that our selection procedure is not only depending on the quality, but also on the bigger picture of all the compositions combined as one concept. If you are not invited first time around, it doesn´t mean it will not happen in the second round.
One disclaimer: keep in mind that all kinds of people are going to be visiting the BlackBox when it´s on display: not only people of all ages, but also people with all kinds of musical backgrounds. Your composition can be obscure or even atonal, but the last thing we want is to shock people or stimulate them to use the panic button. Experimental stuff is welcome but keep this in mind!
