Logic Setup Assistant (OS X only)
The "Logic Setup Assistant³ (LSA) accelerates the process of adapting Logic
to a given hardware setup (computer keyboard and monitor(s), audio and MIDI
interface(s), external MIDI hardware) and personal requirements. It also
makes the task of basic setup extremely easy for new (or technically less
interested) users, as nothing needs to be done in the Environment window.
The LSA guides you through the setup process as follows:
- Scan of Audio and MIDI interfaces
- Choosing an Audio Interface for Logic
- Mixer Setup (adopting the number of tracks, auxes (busses), instruments,
inputs, outputs to the user¹s requirements)
- Choosing a set of Key Commands (improved logic 6 defaults for Powerbook or
standardl keyboard with International or German layout, free Powerkeys set,
further options for ex-ProTools users...) Should you have existing Key
Commands, the "don¹t change existing Key Commands³ option is the default.
- Adaption of useful default Screen Sets for one or two monitors to the
resolution of the available monitor(s) (with a brief explanation about
Screen Sets).
- MIDI device setup with lists of devices, sorted by manufacturer, which can
be added and assigned to any of the available MIDI ports. The existing
settings of Apple¹s "Audio MIDI Setup³ will be displayed (the LSA and AMS
share the same information)
As recommended in the Installation manual, the user should first start the
LSA, then Logic.
Technical Info: The LSA writes an XML document which is scanned by Logic
whenever a "default song³ is created. Existing Autoload songs will not be
altered, and can be further personalized.
Project Manager
The Project Manager is a new window (accessed via the "Windows³ menu) that
allows the user to manage all media files (audio, settings, EXS instruments,
movies, songs) on all connected volumes. The Project Manager recognizes
dependencies _ of note: which audio files and EXS Instruments belong to
which song, and which samples (audio files) belong to which EXS Instrument.
In order to collect all this information, an initial scan process of all
hard disks that are used for audio production is required. Dependent on the
capacity of these hard disks, the initial scan process can take a while _
fortunately it runs in the background. The resulting database is global (not
song dependent), and is stored separately from the preferences.
You can switch between the four basic operating modes of the project manager
_ Browse, Find, Log, Scan Paths _ via the flip menu in the upper left
Scan Paths
It is recommended to define "Scan Paths³ prior to the initial Scan. Via two
buttons you can define paths which should be scanned ("Add include path...³)
and also paths which should never be scanned ("Add exclude path...³). If you
define nothing, all local volumes will be scanned entirely. Depending on the
number, the size of, and the number of files on your volumes this may take a
while. Using "Scan Paths³, you can speed up the scan.
In many cases you might want to define "included paths³, like the Logic
folder (for global EXS Instruments), your global sample library folder and
the folder or volume which you use for your projects and songs.
But depending on your personal studio organisation it might either be easier
to use "exclude paths³ to define those hard disks and folders, which are
never used for media files, e.g. Library and System folders or irrelevant
Please note that you can include subfolders of excluded folders or exclude
subfolders of included folders. Or in other words: subfolders have priority
over higher folders. This means, for example, that you can define the folder
"Applications³ as an excluded path, but also define the folder "Logic³
(inside the "Application³ folder) as an included path. In this case, "Logic³
will be scanned while all other folders inside "Applications³ will not be
Included paths will be displayed in the right part of the Project Manager
window with a leading (+), excluded paths below with a leading (-).
If you want to remove a defined path, select it and click the "Remove path³
The "Browse³ mode displays all file types, structured in category folders on
the left side. You can set and use bookmarks for any folders.
As soon as you choose a specific file type, you can see all matching files
on the right side of the window> All relevant information for each file is
also displayed, including: location (path) and two optional comment fields.
Clicking on the triangle icon beside an audio file will display the waveform
and a list of songs in which it is used. You can use the monitoring feature
(similar to that found in the audio window), or launch the Sample Editor by
double-clicking on the waveform overview. Movie files can also be opened by
double-clicking on them (linked to the current song).
Song files are displayed in blue if all related audio and instrument files
have known locations. If not, songs are displayed in red.
Click on the triangle beside song file names to view a list of audio files /
EXS Instruments that are used in the song.
Info to manual authors: the navigate flip menu will go into an own local
menu "Navigate³ which is visible all the time. Choosing a bookmark will
directly change to Browse mode and the bookmarked directoy, of course. The
menu also allows to create, rename and delete bookmarks. On "Create³
bookmarks will be set to the currently selected directory.
This mode activates a powerful search engine that allows you to search for
all kinds of files which fulfill specified criteria, such as: name (the
entered string can be a full or partial name), comment 1/2, file type and
size. Further options are available for audio files: format, sample/bit
rate, length. It is possible to limit searches to (up to) five definable
paths. All search criteria can be saved to personal "filters³, with
individual names.
The search result is displayed in real-time to the right of the Project
Manager window.
This is "just an ordinary Log³ for Scan processes... All past actions are
displayed in the right part of the Project Manager window. You can click
"Clear Log³ to delete the current Log file.
You can start the Scan process via the local "Options³ menu (or Key
If a directory is selected in Browse mode, only this directory will be
"Expanded Scan³ will examine all files, no matter of their type _ this way
you can even find e.g. .wav audio files that have a wrong header. You better
use this only for individual directories and only in cases when you are
looking for "demaged³ files.
It is possible to "install³ all samples used in any of the existing songs
from a sampling CD-ROM.
Consolidate Song
This performs a "Save as Project...³ of selected Songs within the PM window,
rather than the active Song.
File > Save as projectS
This new global command internally uses the Project Manager¹s database. Use
it to Save a Song with all, or specific data types (audio files, EXS
instruments, samples, movie files), into a new folder - the "Project
Folder³. This is useful for backing up a production, transferring a song to
another studio or simply to organize your hard disk(s) more efficiently...
Use of this command will launch the "Consolidate Song Options³ dialog
window, where you can enter a "Project Folder Name³ and choose from several
options (mainly regarding choices to copy, move or simply leave certain file
types at their locations).
Offline Bounce
The Bounce dialog has been restructured.
The uppermost parameter is "File Type³ (AIFF, WAV, SDII and new: MP3).
Dependent on the selected file type, you will now find some additional
parameters (basically the current stuff; in the case of MP3: all relevant
encoding parameters).
The last parameter - "Bounce Mode³ _ offers the following options:
"realtime³ (old behaviour, required if live inputs are used, e.g. for
external MIDI sound sources) and "offline³. Offline bouncing is not
available if using any DSP hardware such as ProTools (technically
During an offline bounce, the Song Position Line shows the current position
(moving faster than realtime). There is no audio output during an offline
The new bounce dialog window contains a duration (time) display for the
bounce file.
Freeze Tracks
Software Instrument and Audio Tracks now feature a "Freeze³ button (the
small ice crystal icon) in the Arrange window. It can be used whenever the
track utilizes a CPU-hungry Software Instrument and/or CPU-hungry effect
plug-ins and the track¹s arrangement is in a "near-final³ stage.
Freeze will automatically render the original combination of sound source
(Audio Track or Software Instrument) and channel plug-ins (Effects) into an
audio file. This process is invisible to the user, and an audio file will be
played back in place of the original channel signal.
You can still change the volume, pan and send levels of this channel, but
all plug-ins (including the Software Instrument if applicable) are "frozen³
< as they are rendered into the audio file.
Should the final mix require any changes to a frozen track, you can disable
the "Freeze³ at any time, allowing you to tweak any plug-in parameter to
your satisfaction before re-freezing the track. Please bear in mind the fact
that the track will use the CPU resources required by the original "live³
version during editing.

Dependent on the type and number of plug-ins used in a channel, "freezing³
can save a lot of CPU processing power. This is the order of CPU
consumption, in general (ranked from high to low):
- Software Synthesizers with a complex voice architecture
- Software Synthesizers with a simple voice architecture
- Plug-Ins with a very complex architecture (e.g. reverbs, filterbanks,
FFT-based effects)
- Software Sampler with Filter
- Software Sampler w/o Filter
- Plug-Ins with a simple architecture
You can expect the largest performance gains by freezing Instrument channels
with complex synthesizers (e.g. ES2) inserted, and moreso, when using
additional complex Plug-Ins (e.g. PlatinumVerb, Spectral Gate, EVOC
Filterbank) _ whereas freezing an Audio Track that makes use of a few EQ
bands doesn¹t make much sense.

###not yet sure:
The non-accessable area of frozen channel strips is displayed with an "under
ice³ effect.
Arrange Channel Strip
The Channel Strip of the currently selected Arrange track is visible in the
parameter area of the Arrange window. This allows you to access all mixer
channel features such as: volume, pan, sends, inserts, plus channel solo and
mute (in addition to the track mute) from the Arrange window.
This eliminates the need for a Screen Set with a linked "one channel wide³
Environment or Track Mixer window.
Sample-accurate Waveform Display in Arrange
The Arrange window now displays the actual waveform at higher zoom levels
(rather than the "roughly quantised³ overview data of older Logic versions).
New Key Commands allow you to vertically zoom the waveform display inside
regions in the Arrange window, which is especially useful for cutting
regions with a low signal level.
This new Arrange Tool (which looks like a crosshair) allows you to select a
rectangular section within regions and sequences _ independent of their
existing borders. Within this selected area, you can perform almost all
regular edit operations, including:
- delete (backspace key or eraser tool)
- move (drag) or copy (alt-drag) with Arrow tool
- cut/copy
- paste (at SPL, quantized to bars)
- copy/paste also available with pencil tool (quantized to format value)
- cut at selection borders (with scissor tool)
- mute (Key Command or tool, includes cut operation)
- solo (Key Command, includes cut operation)
Marquee selections are global (visible in all Arrange windows).
The Marquee Tool with automatically snap to "interesting" positions. (See
the "SmartSnap" feature.) With the "CONTROL" modifier the finest resolution
depending of the zoom factor is chosen.
With the "SHIFT" modifier the current marquee-selection can be altered
either from the left or the right side.
Hide Tracks
It is now possible to hide Arrange tracks _ without affecting their playback
in any way.
This is achieved via the global "HideView³ button in the Arrange. If
activated, you will see an individual "H³ (Hide) button beside all Tracks.
You can activate Hide for any individual Track by clicking on the Hide
button. Note that it is also possible to link the Hide functions of all
tracks that belong to a Group (depending on the Group¹s property settings).
As soon as you deactivate the global "Show hidden Tracks³ button, all Tracks
with their individual "H³ buttons engaged are hidden. The "H³ buttons of the
other tracks are also invisible, as they are superfluous in this scenario.
You can hide tracks, even when in this global mode, via the "Hide current
track and select next tack³ Key Command.
You can switch between the global "HideView³ modes with the "Toggle Hide
View³ Key Command.
The "Unhide all Tracks³ Key Command resets the Hide buttons of all Tracks,
and makes all Tracks visible.
Automation Groups
Logic version 6 supports Groups. Groups allow to combine various tracks with
their instrument to share a certain behaviour. Up to 32 groups can be
created with different settings.
Assigning a Group to a Channel
There is a new group parameter in the channel above of the automation mode.
Clicking on it opens the group flip menu where one of the 32 groups can be
chosen, or "off", or the "Group Settings...".
The channel strip is visible in the Track Mixer, in the environment or in
the arrange window on the left side if the arrange window is high enough.
Overlapping Groups
One channel can belong to more than one group. To add an additional group to
a channel press the SHIFT modifier while choosing a group with the group
flip menu.
Tip: Groups can be quickly set and cleared with the OPTION mopdifier pressed
when clicking on the group parameter. The last group setting - including
overlapping groups - will be applied to the current channel without opening
the flip menu.
Group Settings
The Group flip menu also allows to open the "Group Settings...". In the
group setting dialog the following options can be set for each individual
Name. You can name each group.
Enable. A group can be completely disabled here.
Arrange Selection (Edit). Selecting one member of a group selects all
Arrange Track Zoom. Zooming an individual track of a group will zoom all
Arrange Track Hide. HIding an individual track of a group will hide all
Arrange Track Record. Record enable of an individual track of a group will

Automation Mode. Changing the automation mode of an individual track of a
group will change the automation mode for all members.
If one of the following options is enabled changing the value of any group
member will change all other members as well:
Send 1-8 (individually)
For mix automation any group member can act as a "master" for an automated
value like "Volume". When a value is written the corresponding value is
written to all other group members depending of the automation mode (e.g. in
Touch, Latch, Write Automation mode). The data is stored individually for
each channel. As a result you can edit or change individual channels later
without affecting other group members if you disable that group.
Group Handling on the Logic Control
Click-holding the GROUP button allows you to use the SELECT buttons to
assign the selected channels to the next free (new) group. You can use the
BANK switches during this operation.
While in the Group mode (click and release the GROUP button), you can switch
between Groups with the UP/DOWN cursor keys. The Group number (G1-G9, 10-32)
is displayed in the 7-segment ASSIGNMENT display, the first few characters
of the Group name are displayed in the SMPTE/BAR display.
The LCDisplay shows the track names in the top line. The bottom line will
indicate the Group properties of the selected Group. The LEFT/RIGHT cursor
keys switch to further pages of Group properties. The SELECT keys
display/edit the assignment of their channel to the currently selected
TRACK+GROUP activates a Track Multi Channel View mode, which allows to
assign each channel to any Group (or "off³) via its V-Pot. Alternatively you
can enter this mode by TRACK and cursor left/right until you reach "Group³.

Automation Quick Access
This new feature makes Track Automation extremely fast and simple _ even if
you only have one hardware MIDI controller (e.g. a modulation wheel)
available. You can use this single hardware controller to access the
currently visible Automation parameter of the selected Track in the Arrange
Open Options > Track Automation > Automation Settings...
There is a new section labeled "Automation Quick Access³ which can be
enabled or disabled via a checkbox. Once enabled, click the "Learn Message³
button below, and move the hardware controller that you would like to use
for Automation Quick Access. The other parameters shown here will
immediately identify, and indicate the type of control element you are using
(even quite exotic formats are available).
Once done, you will have hardware control over any currently visible
Automation parameter which is set in the current Arrange track.
Improved Time Machine II
The Time Machine features a new algorithm that delivers dramatically
improved audio quality, and perfect precision of the length of the processed
audio data.
Operationally, it is unchanged, but now offers a few (important) new
Time Stretching is available directly in the Arrange window: The new
(menu/key) command "adjust object length to locators³ stretches selected
regions to match the length defined by the locators.
The "Adjust Object length to nearest bar³ command uses the Time Machine to
adjust the region¹s length to the closest whole number of bars. This is
ideal for drum loops that are perfectly cut, but are of the wrong tempo for
the song.
Channel EQ plug-in
There is a new Track EQ in Logic 6 which sets new standards in sound quality
and ease of use. It offers 8 bands with fixed modes: a highpass filter, a
low shelving EQ, four parametric EQ bands, a high shelving EQ and a lowpass
filter. All bands are fully parametric (including Q for the filters).
You can enable/disable bands with the band type icon buttons, found at the
top of the plug-in window. All other edits can be performed directly in the
graphic display.
There is always one band "in access³ (highlighted) which reacts to mouse
actions _ the highlighted band will change as you move the mouse left/right
over the display. As soon as you click and hold the mouse button, movements
to the left/right change the frequency while up/down movements change the
gain. You can also change the Q value with the mouse: click and hold the
peak mark of a band¹s graphic, and move the mouse up/down.
The graphic display always shows the resulting EQ/filter-curve, and the
isolated curve of the currently highlighted band < also if you alternatively
click and drag the numerical parameter values below the display.
Each channel EQ allows you to switch on a high resolution analyzer, which
overlays the EQ graphic. Below the Master Gain value display are two
parameters: Analyzer off/pre/post EQ and the resolution of the Analyzer
(1024/2048/4096 points).
Note: higher resolutions are best used to enhance the display of bass
As soon as the Analyzer is activated, you can read its scale on the right
side of the graphic display. The Analyzer curve is displayed in blue.
Note that each Analyzer in use requires significant CPU processing power
(this increases at higher resolution values)! Of course, Analyzers will only
require CPU power as long as the Channel EQ window is open.
You can change the scale by click-dragging up/down. The EQ graphic scale can
be spread around 0 dB (but still shows a ±30 dB range). The Analyzer scale
can be shifted between +20 dB and _100 dB (but always shows a 60 dB range).
Please note, that the Analyzer scale (right of the display) is always dB
linear _ independent from the scale warp of the EQ (left side of the
EQ Thumbnail
The first Channel EQ used on a channel is displayed as a thumbnail graphic
on the channel surface (provided that the "show EQs³ audio object parameter
is active).
Logic Control
Pushing the EQ button on the Logic Control opens the first available channel
EQ of the selected channel. If no Channel EQ is inserted in the selected
channel, it will automatically be inserted in the first free Insert slot.
Old Track EQs
The new Channel EQ is designed to replace the Track EQ of Logic versions 5
and older.
You can, of course, open old songs that use the old Track EQ with full
editing access.
On the new Song Settings page "Old Songs³ is a new option that allows you to
"Use pre-Logic 6 Track EQs³ which will automatically be enabled in old songs
that make use of the old Track EQ.
Please remember to remove old Track EQs in your Autoload (and switch off the
"use pre-Logic 6 Track EQs³ option) if necessary and benefit from the new
Channel EQ!
Video Thumbnail Track
The track instrument menu allows to set any track to "Video Thumbnail". This
track will show video thumbnails if this song has a quicktime video. The
track can be zoomed. The density of displayed frames depends on the zoom
factor. The frames are left aligned: the position of the left border belongs
to a frame. There is one exception: the very last frame of a movie is right
aligned. This makes sure that the very first and the very last frame of a
movie is always visible.
QuickTime Movie Playback via FireWire
If you own a FireWire device which can display a video (or has an monitor
output to display a video), this one is for you: use it in Logic 6 for the
QuickTime movie that is opened in your Song.
Open the movie as per usual (Options > Open movie...). A long click in the
movie window will open the QuickTime options pop-up menu.
The new "DV output³ option switches the movie playback to the external DV
device which, of course, must be connected to your computer via FireWire (a
digital video camera, for example).

###this will come soon and should be described as the first way to do it:
The "DV output³ option in the global Options menu switches the movie
playback to the external DV device which, of course, must be connected to
your computer via FireWire.
MP3 Support
MP3 Import
The Add file dialog, shift-clicking with the pencil tool in Arrange, and
drag & drop of audio files from the Finder to the Audio or Arrange window
now all support MP3 files. Any MP3 files that are added to the song will
automatically be converted to AIFF _ the default audio file type used in
Technical note: Some options such as waveform displays or sample-accurate
editing wouldn¹t work with MP3 files, if used directly in Logic _ and this
is beside the additional CPU power consumption that would be required for
real-time decoding. As such, the "conversion-on-import³ method was selected
as it affords users a number of advantages when handling MP3 files.
MP3 Export
It is possible to use MP3 as file format for (offline or real-time) bouncing
(see description above). In addition, there is an MP3 conversion option for
selected audio files in the Audio window.
You can set up the encoding options globally in the new "MP3 export³
Preferences page:
The Bit Rate can be set up separately for mono and stereo files. The
defaults (80/160 kilobytes per second) provide acceptable audio quality,
while maintaining a good reduction factor. If the file size doesn¹t matter,
we recommend that you change this value to 96/192 kbps. Higher Rates are
possible, but don¹t result in large quality gains (remember: we are talking
about MP3 files here).
The "Quality³ parameter should remain at the default setting: "Highest³. You
can speed up the conversion process with lower settings (note that this
results in lower audio quality), but this should only be done in cases where
the conversion time matters.
The "Use Variable Bit Rate Encoding (VBR)³ option is switched OFF by
default, to maintain compatibility with the highest number of decoders. We
recommend that you switch it on for a brief "test conversion³, and check if
the receiver of your MP3 files can play the files with his/her playback
engine/decoder. If the receiver can play the test file, you should make use
of VBR, as it generally leads to better sounding MP3s.
"Use Best Encoding³ is another option that should remain active at all
times. Again, only if conversion time matters, should you experiment with
these settings.
"Filter Frequencies Below 10 Hz³ is an option that, if active, retains a
small amount of data bandwidth for the important part of the signal above 10
Hz, resulting in better sounding MP3 files. (Note: Frequencies below 10 Hz
are not reproduced by most speakers _ even very large ones _ and are outside
the range of human hearing). The only case where you may wish to switch this
option OFF is when experimenting with test signals...
Expanded Control Surface Support
The Automation System of Logic 6 can not only be controlled with the Logic
Control but also by third-party Hardware Controllers.
Logic Audio/Gold/Platinum
- Tascam US-428, US-224
Logic Platinum
- Mackie HUI or HUI emulation of Yamaha DM2000/1000, 02R96 (attention: some
keys are labeled differently to those of the HUI on Yamaha desks...)
- Motormix from C.M. Automation/Digidesign (Dashboard not yet available)
- Roland SI-24
- Radical SAC-2k, SAC-2.2 (SAC-8X not yet available, but support planned)
Chord Recognition in Matrix Editor
Multiple selected notes will be displayed with their chord name in the info
section of the Matrix editor.
New Icons
###This will be implemented soon
Logic 6 introduces a new Icon format for colored, scalable (from 128x128
pixels downwards) and user-definable icons. The old Icons remain in the
program. The new factory icons replace old icons with the same content.
If a track with a new Icon is zoomed sufficiently, you will see the large
User-definable Icons
User-defined Icons must have an alpha channel for transparency and a size of
128 x 128 pixels. There is a folder named "LogicImages³ (MacOS 9: in the
Logic application folder; MacOS X: in the Logic application package) which
contains a folder called "Icons³. All icon names must start with a 3-digit
number. This is the number of the old icon which will be replaced (all old
icons are numbered _ you can check the number with a double click on the
icon in the parameterbox). All Icon file names must end with ".png³.
Smart Snap in Arrange and Matrix
A new "SmartSnap" feature allows to drag, move or size objects or selections
very easily and intuitively. SmartSnap is context sensitive regarding the
current zoom setting. Depending on the zoom setting the mouse position will
snap to context sensitive "interesting" positions within a certain graphical
range. Interesting positions are things like bar boundaries, beat or format
positions, or even single musical ticks. SmartSnap also evaluates the
importance of the interesting positions. For example bar boundaries are more
"interesting" than beat boundaries, therefore it is easier to drag an object
on a bar boundary.
In most cases you don't have to think about snapping because SmartSnap
simply will do the right thing. Nevertheless you can avoid the automatic
snapping by pressing the CONTROL modifier: in this case you get the finest
possible resolution to any pixel on screen.
³Displayed Parameters² mode on Logic Control
Click-hold TRACK and simultaneously clicking V-Pot 7 ("DisplP³) switches in
Displayed Parameters mode. This ideal if you want to control multiple
Automation parameters of a Track (activated with the small triangles in the
Arrange) simultaneously. Try this in combination with Flip mode to use the
Faders instead of the V-Pots.

###alfa tester: in current version, you not only have to manually enable the
Extended Track View (SHIFT-GLOBAL View) but also have to do one
Cursor-RIGHT-click < then you¹re there... this will change of course.
Logic Interface Language Switching in OS X
###This is still optional!
The method of switching Logic¹s user interface language will change in Mac
OS X, in accordance with system standards. In older Logic versions, this was
part of Logic¹s Preferences, with the "Default Language³ being dependent
upon the keyboard layout.
Starting with version 6, Logic¹s interface language will change in
accordance with the system-wide language setting. There is, of course, still
a way to set a different interface language:
Select the Logic application in the Finder, and open the Information panel
(Command-I). In the "Languages³ section, you can deactivate all unwanted
interface languages. If you _ for example _ leave "English³ checked while
all other languages are unchecked, Logic will be forced to use English, even
if your OS X System is set to another language.
The old Language Preference of previous Logic versions was removed.

Sjesus man EDP doe ff normaal met zo'n megalange quote! ;)
