"What's the difference between an AN1x and PLG150-AN?
The major additions to AN for the PLG150-AN is the introduction of the VCO cross modulation algorithm and new oscillator wave forms (Multisaw, Triangle, Sinewave.)

The AN1x second Scene is not available on PLG150AN. This will not affect most AN1x voices, as it is common for only a single Scene to be used (the second scene providing a variation for morphing or accompaniment). Note that Scene morphing can be replicated by creating two voices from the original AN1x voice, each containing one of the original scenes. Thereafter store these as two separate voices on the PLG150-AN and use the program scene morph feature of the PLG150-AN device.

Layer/Split Modes - the PLG150-AN only supports Single and Unison mode.

Effects - The PLG150-AN only provides AMP SIM variation effect and EQ. If the original AN1x effects are important to the voice they must be recreated using the effects unit of the host device (e.g. CS6x, SW1000XG, MU100, MU128, S80 etc).

Hence in general the PLG150-AN does sound pretty much identical to the AN1x (so long as the above restrictions do not affect the voice). Using An1xEdit it is possible to intelligently transfer voices between the AN1x and PLG150AN. For more information see the An1xEdit help file sections "AN1x/PLG150-AN Overview" and "File Types and Voice Data".

Parameter differences between the AN1x and PLG150-AN are detailed in the 'AN1xEdit Help' file.

What's the difference between an AN1x and AN200?
The AN200 is a PLG150-AN card outfitted in a hardware enclosure that includes a selection of real time knobs and buttons for playback and recording. The major addition which distinguishes the AN200 from the AN1x is the 3 part multi-timbral AWM2 sound engine which provides 32 voices of polyphony. Three tracks are provided for you to build rhythm patterns using the 120 built-in drum, bass and percussive synth sounds."

Lijkt mij dus duidelijk :mega:

Maar even de gehel site geplakt, omdat deze binnekort uit de lucht gaat, houden we het toch hier voro ons nageslacht zullen we maar zeggen

How do I transfer sounds from the computer to the AN1x, PLG150-AN or AN200?
You will need to use a computer program which allows for the transfer of System Exclusive information via a standard MIDI Interface to your AN1x, PLG150-AN or AN200. The most popular Editor/Librarian compatible with the AN1x, PLG150-AN and AN200 is AN1xEdit (Mac/Win): http://www.xgfactory.com/html/down/an1xed_1.htm

AN Expert Editor (Mac/Win) is widely used with both the PLG150-AN and AN200: http://www.xgfactory.com/html/down/down_f.htm

Commonly used bulk dump utility utilities are MIDI-OX (Win) http://www.midiox.com/ and SysEx Librarian (Mac) http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/

Most Audio/MIDI Sequencers such as Cakewalk, Cubase, Digital Performer, Logic Audio, Metro, Sonar, Traktion, etc. allow for data transfers using Standard MIDI Files

[top] [contents]

Which MIDI Interface should I purchase?
Low-cost PC sound cards with MIDI I/O and inexpensive off-brand USB MIDI Interfaces are particularly fault sensitive to errors with AN series bulk dumps. When possible, stick to name brand multi-port MIDI Interfaces - serial port MIDI Interfaces are preferred but the reality is that USB MIDI Interfaces are now prevalent in the market place.

MIDIMAN USB MIDI Interfaces (the MIDISport 2x2 for example) from M-Audio have proven reliable for SysEx on Win - less so on MacOS 9 & OS X although the drivers have seen marked improvement from the earlier versions: http://www.m-audio.com/

Emagic USB MIDI Interfaces - including the MT4 - are reliable under both MacOS 9 and OS X: http://www.emagic.de/products/index.php?lang=EN

Mark of the Unicorn has a wide variety of cross-platform capable MIDI Interfaces: http://www.motu.com/

What is MIDI?
For "Musical Instrument Digital Interface," the wiring and message protocol that allows musical instruments and other devices to communicate.

[top] [contents]

What is a Bulk Dump?
A function used to transfer data from an entire section of one MIDI device to another, for archiving, transfer, or saving/loading. The data is transmitted as MIDI System Exclusive messages. Real-time performance data (such as note information and controller messages) in a MIDI bulk dump is not sent in sequential order, like MIDI data sent in real time is. For a synthesizer, bulk data can include all the settings of all the parameters that make up a sound, a bank of sounds or setups, a bank of songs, etc. With an effects processor or mixer, bulk data can include EQ settings, effects/program settings, mixer settings, etc.

[top] [contents]

What's the difference between an AN1x and PLG150-AN?
The major additions to AN for the PLG150-AN is the introduction of the VCO cross modulation algorithm and new oscillator wave forms (Multisaw, Triangle, Sinewave.)

The AN1x second Scene is not available on PLG150AN. This will not affect most AN1x voices, as it is common for only a single Scene to be used (the second scene providing a variation for morphing or accompaniment). The AN1x makes a 'popping and clicking' sound?
There was a known problem with the AN1x during its first year of production where an audible "popping" & "clicking" would occur when accessing certain Voices in DUAL mode when the AN1x was first powered up. Yamaha was forthcoming in acknowledging the problem and providing a resolution.

The repair is referred to by Yamaha as a "factory modification". The synth will need to be returned to a Yamaha facility. Authorized Yamaha Service Centers are not equipped to affect the repair. It is a hardware repair and does not register on the diagnostic equipment used by your local tech - you have to use your ears for this one.

Contact Yamaha Customer Service and request a 'Return Authorization Number' in advance of shipping the instrument being shipped to Yamaha.

I've no knowledge regarding Yamaha's policy on out-of-warranty repairs or the associated cost.

[top] [contents]

What's a Voice?
In polyphony, a term refering to one of the notes that can be output simultaneously by a synthesizer or other musical instrument.
In synthesizers, a term meaning the same thing as 'sound', 'tone', or 'patch' (one sound that can be created by the synthesizer).
With the AN1x, a voice is a configuration of all tone generator and other parameter setting, including effects setups and data for a single Voice Pattern, but excluding system settings or the bank of Step Sequencer User Patterns. Therefore, each of the 128 voices in memory can have its own unique configuration of all main parameters.

[top] [contents]

What's a Scene?
Each of the AN1x's 128 voices has two Scene memories, each of which are instantly accessible by pressing the [SCENE 1] or[SCENE 2] switch. Each Scene can have its own distinct sound.

[top] [contents]

How do I copy Scenes between Voices?
Scene Load Function
Hold [SCENE 1] (or [SCENE 2] and enter the number of the voice whose Scene data you want to copy. The selected voice number flashes in the LCD.
Press [YES/ENTER] to execute the Scene Load operation, or [NO] to cancel it.
[top] [contents]

How do I swap Scenes in a Voice?
Scene Swap Function
Hold [STORE] and press both [SCENE 1] and [SCENE 2] switches. "SURE?[Y/N]" flashes in the LCD
Press [YES/ENTER] to execute the Scene Swap operation, or [NO] to cancel it.
Alternatively if you are using AN1xEdit: double click the source voice in the library so that it becomes the current edit voice. Then select any control in the source scene and use the Edit menu copy option. Now load up the target voice from the library and select any control in the destination scene - then choose the Edit menu Paste Scene option.

[top] [contents]

How do I morph between Scenes in a Voice?
Pressing both [SCENE] switches simultaneously activates the Scene Control function, which lets you "morph", or cross-fade between Scenes in real-time using the assignable [MODULATION] wheel, an assignable Foot Controller, or any other continuous controller.

[top] [contents]

How is morphing different on the PLG150-AN and AN200 vs. the AN1x?
Morphing on the AN1x occurs between two Scence in a Voice; Morphing on the PLG150-AN and AN200 occurs between two Voices. Scene morphing can be replicated on the PLG150-AN and AN200 by creating two voices from the original AN1x voice, each containing one of the original two scenes. Thereafter store these as two separate voices on the PLG150-AN and use the program scene morph feature of the PLG150-AN device.

[top] [contents]

What´s the difference between the X-Mod of the PLG150-AN and AN200 vs. the FM inside the AN1x?
The AN engine algorithm provides two ways of modulating one oscillator with another:

You can perform FM, where the wave of one oscillator (called the modulator) periodically changes the pitch or frequency of another oscillator (called the carrier). In both the AN1x and PLG150-AN, VCO1 is the carrier and we have a whole bunch of sources for the modulator (including VCO2). Furthermore VCO1 can be split into a pair of oscillators and you can select whether either one or both of these use FM.
You can perform Sync modulation. In this case the wave of one oscillator (master) is used to reset the wave of a second oscillator (slave). If the two oscillators are operating at different frequencies, this has the effect of chopping up the output into complex waveforms (generally the master determines the output pitch and the slave determines the timbre/tone). In the AN1x we can use this type of modulation only 'within' VCO1, i.e., VCO1 actually contains two oscillators that can be arranged in a master/slave arrangement. However in the PLG150-AN, you can also choose VCO2 as a master to provide sync modulation to VCO1. This allows for much more complex cross modulation between the two VCOs than standard FM. Therefore the PLG150-AN (and AN200) are capable of producing more complex sounds than the AN1x.
[top] [contents]

What is a multitimbral synthesizer?
The ability of a synthesizer, keyboard, or tone generator to play multiple independent sounds (instrument parts) simultaneously.

[top] [contents]

Is the AN1x multitimbral?
No, the AN1x is not multitimbral. However, the AN1x is bitimbral, i.e., each of the two Scenes in a Voice may be set to receive on independent MIDI Channels.

[top] [contents]

Can each Scene in a Voice transmit on separate MIDI Channels?
No, this is a design limitation of the AN1x.

[top] [contents]

What are the two Control Change Modes on the AN1x?
Mode 1 corresponds to the list of Control Change parameters according to the MIDI standard. Mode 2 is a special list of Control Change parameters unique to the AN1x.

To change between modes, first turn off the power. Then, press and hold [ASSIGN] and press the [POWER] switch. Either "mode1" or "mode2" will appear in the LCD at the start-up procedure to indicate which mode is active.

[top] [contents]

Why does the LED on my MIDI Interface keep flashing when connected to the MIDI Out of the AN1x?
The AN1x both Transmits and Receives Active Sense messages. Active Sense is a type of MIDI message (ie, that travels over your MIDI cables just like note data or controller data). It's used to implement a "safety feature". It can provide an automatic "MIDI panic" control that will cause stuck notes and other undesirable effects to be resolved whenever the MIDI connection inbetween modules is broken or impeded in some way. Active Sense message cannot be disabled on the AN1x.

[top] [contents]

How can I reduce the sensitivity of the Aftertouch transmitted by the AN1x?
There is no contol on the AN1x to scale or eliminate the Aftertouch signal generated by the keyboard that appears at the MIDI Out port. Some possible possible work arounds include:

Place a hardware filters onto the MIDI chain inbetween the MIDI In and MIDI Out ports of your controller and sound module. Some examples:

http://www.midisolutions.com/products.htm --> MIDI Solutions Router
http://www.logiq-electronics.com/ --> Micro MIDI Filter
http://www.forefront.freeserve.co.uk/products.htm - -> FT4 MIDI Filter
Also, various models from Anatek (now out of business?) - check eBay for 2nd hand deals.
Use a MIDI Patchbay. Once fairly common, but now less popular - replaced by multiport MIDI Interfaces for many uses. Popular models to seek out: Digital Music Corp (MX8) - subsequently bought by Ensoniq (KMX8 and KMX16) - and models from Kawai (MAV8).
Filter or Scale the AT signal using your Digital Audio/MIDI Sequencer (Cakewalk, Cubase, Digital Performer, Logic Audio, Metro, Sonar, Traktion, etc.)
[top] [contents]

Does the AN1x, PLG150-AN or AN200 generate MIDI Clock?
The AN1x and PLG150-AN can receive MIDI Clock; The AN200 can send or receive MIDI Clock.

[top] [contents]

How do I synchronize the Arp/Seq to incoming MIDI Clock?

I'm having problems Transmitting and/or Receiving bulk dumps?
This is a reoccurring issue with both the AN1x and AN200. The most concise explanation regarding why AN* bulk dumps can prove difficult was provided by Gary Gregson - author of AN1xEdit:

'The problem with the AN1x is that its bulk dumps are very large (by most synth standards). Doing a full patch dump transmits 128K of data. This is sent in packets of over 1K with a 5ms gap between each. This stresses any MIDI interface by driving it at full bandwidth. If there are any delays in the MIDI path or buffering problems, it is very easy to either lose packets, bytes or to change the inter packet delay time. The net result is that the AN1x will not accept the data.

Ideally Yamaha should have used smaller packets (around 256 bytes, which is what most MIDI interfaces/software seem capable of handling comfortably) and left a bigger gap between blocks. Unfortunately this would have also dramatically increased the transmission/receive times (which I am sure many will testify are long enough already :-)'

AN1xEdit will Transfer but not Receive Voices?! (Mac OS 9)
The Macintosh version of AN1xEdit requires the use of OMS (Open Music System) configured for your MIDI Interface to communicate with the AN1x synthesizer. Under some circumstances AN1xEdit will not receive SysEx from the AN1x - typically when the MIDI Interface has been disconnected or reinstalled.

Here's the quick fix to restore communication between OMS and AN1xEdit:

Make certain you are running v1.02 or higher of AN1xEdit.
Double check that OMSLibPPC.slb is in the AN1xEdit folder - do NOT move this item to your Extensions folder. OMSLibPPC.slb should remain in the AN1xEdit folder.
From within AN1xEdit, under the Setup menu select the MIDI Port Setup... option.
Notice the devices listed in the drop down menu are those defined in your OMS Studio Setup document. Typically you the MIDI In and MIDI Out options are set to AN1x. In those instances where OMS and AN1xEdit have stopped communicating - toggle between any devices other than the AN1x from the MIDI Port Setup... dialog then back again to AN1x will reestablish the dropped connection.

Why does the Ribbon controller reset to the center position?
When you release your finger fromt he [RIBBON] controller, the value may remain at the same position as at the time of release, or reset to the center position depending on the Control Matrix settings.

When Pitch Up/Pitch Down is selected for "Parameter", the [RIBBON] controller value will reset to the center position when you release your finger from the [RIBBON].

There are user reports of an intermittent bug when the [RIBBON] controller is assigned to a parameter other than Pitch Up/Pitch Down the controller value resets to center. This problem can be temporarily resolved by powering off/on AN1x but reoccurs when a program change is issued to inc/dec the current Voice. While working on this FAQ, I've been unable to recreate the described behavior.

The Ribbon controller on the AN1x no longer works?!
There have been infrequent user reports where the [RIBBON] controller on the AN1x has ceased to function despite the correct configuration of "Parameter", "Source", and "Depth" settings in the Control Matrix. This is most commonly the result of a loose physical cable connection to the Ribbon controller and can be remedied by opening the AN1x and reconnecting the loose connection.

Can the AN1x LFOs be synchornized to MIDI Clock?
No, the LFOs cannot be synchronized to MIDI Clock. However, using the spreadsheat "AN1x, PLG150-AN, AN200: LFO Value to Herz Lookup" at: http://www.xgfactory.com/downloads/an-lfo1.PDF and a music calculater http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/MUSIC_CALCULATORS/ it's relatively easy to determine a Hz value value and adjust the LFO value to match your song tempo. Note: The parameter value range in the Look table is 0 - 255 where as the actual value range on the AN1x is 1 - 256.

Tip: when using the Free EG each of the four tracks is synchronized to the same clock source as the Arp/Seq. You can select time length in bars (up to 8 measures) or absolute time (up to 16.0 seconds.)

How do I use the Control Matrix?
Getting Started with the AN1x Control Matrix
By Gary Gregson August 2000

The Control Matrix is perhaps one of the most powerful features of the AN1x.

Unfortunately it appears to be overlooked by most people when creating voices. This is a shame, as it can add so many dynamic possibilities to a voice.

The basic purpose of the Matrix is to map incoming (CC) continuous controllers (1 - 95) and other standard MIDI controllers (e.g. After touch, Pitch Bend) and keyboard specific controllers (e.g. Knobs, ribbon etc) to AN1x parameters.

In this way you can configure a whole bunch of 'controllers' to control a bunch of AN1x 'parameters' in real-time! What's more its very flexible...so for instance you can have a single controller affect multiple AN1x parameters simultaneously...or a number of different controllers affect a single AN1x parameter. Or different controllers affecting different scenes etc...

There are two basic scenarios where the power of the function can be realized:

When playing the synth live - you can have a set of foot controllers etc (or the on keyboard controllers; knobs, wheels, ribbon etc) configured to perform real-time voice modifications. This can give you significantly more expression, timbre and dynamic control over the voice.
When playing the synth from a sequencer - you can setup a bunch of standard controllers (which are easily edited by your sequencers built in functions e.g. controller curves etc) to edit the voice during playback in a reproducible manner. Using this method is significantly easier (both for entry and modification) than attempting to embed lots of SysEx data edits in the body of a song! In fact if you carefully create a matrix for each voice, you can effectively dispense with having to run AN1xEdit and your sequencer together...just use normal patch select and controller messages instead!
If you are using AN1xEdit (as you should be :-) you will find all Control Matrix parameters laid out in the Matrix view. Each scene has its own 16 controller mappings, together with specific controls for setting pitch bend up/down ranges. In addition their are a pair of Voice Common mappings that are global to the whole voice (but are displayed in the scene matrix for ease of access.)

The Source value determines which input controller is used (if you look at the popup list, the selections should be self explanatory.)

The Parameter value determines which AN parameter is affected by the input controller. Again the popup list of possible selections should be pretty much self explanatory. However it is worth noting that not all controllers can be mapped to all AN parameters. Where a parameter cannot be mapped it will be shown in red within the list (you can select such parameters...but they will have no affect in use.)

So for example you could have the keyboard after touch response increase the resonance of the voice filter: i.e. SOURCE=AFTERTOUCH, PARAMETER=RESONANCE

The Depth parameter determines the actual scaling of input source controller range to the range of the selected parameter. Obviously, most standard CC's operate in range 0 - 127. However, different AN parameters have different operating ranges e.g. LFO1 Delay has a range of 0 - 127 whereas LFO1 Speed has a range 0 - 255. So in the first case you do not need to scale the CC's values, but in the second case you may wish to scale the input to achieve the full output parameter range.

Hence the Depth control allows you to set the scaling...either positive or negative by some value....or to leave as is (DIRect).

The possibilities available within the matrix are endless...so no amount of examples will really do it justice or explain all the possible nuances you can achieve. Therefore your best option is just to experiment. As always a good place to start is with some existing voices that have been configured to use the Matrix (take a look at the Best Of Yamaha set.) Check out the Matrix mappings in each voice, and experiment with manipulating the controllers that are assigned as sources! You should soon get the idea!!

Also make sure you check out the real-time parameter editing features of the Free AN1xEG and Step Sequencer!
