Naar aanleiding van een nieuwe firmware update vind ik dat de Squarp Pyramid ondertussen wel een dedicated thread krijgt die op de voorpagina terecht komt.
Ik heb sinds vorig jaar een Squarp Pyramid en het laatste half jaar zijn er aardig wat nieuwe features toegevoegd...
Deze versie maakt je minder afhankelijk van de centrale encoder (in vorige versies moest je nogal vaak een toetsencombinatie indrukken en aan de centrale encoder draaien).
Er wordt nu meer gebruik gemaakt van de 5 encoders + het touchpanel. En blijkbaar gaan ze dit nog verder uitbreiden wat de algehele workflow ten goede komt.
Die euclidic step sequencer kan je nu dus bvb realtime tweaken met de encoders...
Voor de rest ook step-locks (Elektron-style?) en het uittekenen van midi-events (e.g. CC) dmv het touchpad.

Ik heb hem nog niet besteld omdat ik twijfel aan de mogelijkheden om in echte tijd (real time) in te spelen. Volgens mij ben je gebonden aan patronen van niet meer dan 64 maten en ik heb er vaak meer nodig als ik opneem. Hoe is jouw ervaring?
Ik werk inderdaad meer met kortere patterns (meestal 4 of 8 bars maar soms ook 12, 16, 24 of 32).
Ik heb het even voor je uitgezocht en hij kan realtime opnemen tot 384 bars (en je kan natuurlijk altijd sjoemelen met het tempo/maatsoort, indien nodig).
Een van de grote voordelen van de Squarp is dat hij polyritmiek, polymetriek en irrationele ritmes ondersteunt.
Zo kan je zelfs met een paar kortere loops die tesamen lopen toch aardig wat variatie hebben voordat het zichzelf herhaald.
En daarvoor is hij volgens mij ook net gemaakt. Om te experimenteren met loop based muziek zonder dat je snel hervalt in de eindeloze herhaling van een 4/4 loop.
Als je gewoon een lineaire midi player zoekt is de Squarp volgens mij wat overkill...

Hoe is de kwaliteit van de encoders? Beetje robuste feel?
Kan me voorstellen dat als je met veel gebruik die knoppen 350 keer per dag indrukt dat ze wel wat moeten kunnen hebben..

Heb hem nog niet opengemaakt maar hij voelt als een tank. Volledig van staal en dus redelijk zwaar voor zo'n klein doosje. Knoppen en pads voelen stevig aan en moet je bijgevolg ook bewust indrukken en kan je niet per ongeluk triggeren.
Hij voelt dus helemaal niet zoals die low budget Chinese/Japanse synths waarmee we momenteel overspoeld worden, waarvan ik me afvraag hoe lang die nog zullen meegaan...
Ik dacht dat de ontwerper een verleden had als industrieel ontwerper en dat zie en voel je er ook aan (in de goede zin).
Het grootste nadeel dat ik persoonlijk vind is dat je te afhankelijk bent van combinaties van shortcuts (e.g. twee pads simultaan indrukken) en draaien aan de centrale encoder wat soms wat onhandig is (of op zijn minst niet intuitief is).
Een groot voordeel is dat je de ontwikkeling van het OS mee kan sturen. Je kan suggesties doen en krijgt meestal binnen de 24 uur een degelijk antwoord. Hij erkende bovenstaande issue en in het meest recente OS kan je nu vaak gewoon de 5 encoders en touchpad gebruiken zonder dat je van die ingewikkelde combinaties moet maken.
Waarom stuur je hem niet gewoon een mailtje met je vragen over de bouwkwaliteit of gebruikte materialen?

Slightly off topic.... Worden er nog synths effectief in Japan gemaakt? Of bedoel je ontworpen in Japan?
Japanse bouwkwaliteit is over het algemeen gewoon goed (kijk maar naar die rolands uit de jaren 80). Ik heb ook nog een prima Japanse camera uit de 70's waar ik wekelijks mee fotografeer.
Mijn punt is dat die Squarp aanvoelt als een tank omdat hij effectief van stevige/zware materialen gemaakt is. Ik dacht dat ze in Parijs in kleine oplagen met de had geassembleerd werden.
Hij voelt eerder als een Zweedse tank alla Clavia, Elektron die decennias zal meegaan dan zo'n plastic minisynth met SMD componenten en plastic pots...
De jaren 70 en 80 zijn ondertussen wel al een jaar of 40 voorbij. Ik vraag me af of we in 2055 nog zullen spreken van de Yamaha Reface en Roland Boutique...

● Looper: a new way to capture your performance, in the style of looper pedals! A rec (from the start) will start a loop recording, that means that the track length will grow with the track player position. To activate the looper feature, enter SETTINGS>MISC>LIVE LOOPER and select the looper time quantization.
● Hard record: press 2ND+PLAY to activate a hard recording. This enable you to overwrite the previously recorded notes, like an "overdub OFF" recording.
● Player tracking: now, the viewed page in LIVE mode always follows the player position.
● Metronome: now, you have to press 2ND+LIVE to enable or disable the metronome. This feature is improved, metronome notes are shorter.
● Played notes on keyboard pads: the processed & sent notes are displayed on the 13 keyboard pads, with low luminosity.
● Quick copy/paste/delete track

Zijn er nog ondervindingen met de Pyramid r.5?
Ik zat al ff te geilen op een octatrack die ik dan ook kan gebruiken als sequencer voor externe gear maar dat ding lijkt me heel diep (over het kleine display ga ik niet zeiken want dat op de Pyramid is volgens mij quasi hetzelfde format). Zat te denken dat ik dan evengoed een Pyramid en een oude korg electribe SD sampler kan aanschaffen.

Als je een sequencer zoekt, moet je voor de Pyramid gaan. Geweldig ding. Als je een unieke live-sampler wilt die ook wel een beetje kan sequencen (maar niet 'wat je speelt is wat je krijgt') ga je voor de Octa. Ook een geweldig ding, maar geen geweldige sequencer.

Ik heb er afgelopen week één besteld en die wordt op dit moment geassembleerd.
Ik heb hééééééél lang getwijfeld tusen de Pyramid en de OT, maar m'n keuze is uiteindelijk gevallen op de Pyramid.
Ik kan niet wachter totdat hij er is!!!
